adc37bad40 boards: Configure I2C/SPI default for boards with magnetometer alias
For all boards that have a magnetometer devicetree alias, configure the
appropriate bus (I2C or SPI) default to be enabled when the sensor

general) because it will eliminate the need to add a bunch of

b789c11775 drivers: sensor: Change fxos8700 default mode from accel-only to hybrid
The fxos8700 device supports 3 modes: accelerometer-only,
magnetometer-only, or hybrid (accelerometer and magnetometer) modes. The
accelerometer-only mode is register compatible with mma8451q, mma8652fc,
and mma8653fc, which allows the fxos8700 driver to be used with these
devices as well.

Most in-tree boards can use hybrid mode because they have the fxos8700
device, therefore we change the driver default to match the common case.
For the handful of boards that have an mma86xx or mma84xx device, we
override the driver default to accelerometer-only mode. As a result, we
can enable the magn_polling sample application for the fxos8700 driver
without having to add a bunch of board-specific configuration overlays
for hybrid mode.

7b940cabe5 boards: bbc_microbit: Fix usage of GPIOTE channels
There are only 4 GPIOTE channels available in the nRF51 SoC that is
used in the bbc_microbit board. After the display driver for the board
has been reworked to use the nRF LED matrix display driver underneath
(see commit 44585b7fc5), 3 of those are
used for handling the display, so only 1 remains for other uses. This
causes problems with handling of buttons (as it needs GPIO interrupts
and by default the GPIO shim driver uses GPIOTE channels for their
generation) and also the SW PWM driver fails to initialize in its
default configuration (as it requires 3 GPIOTE channels for providing
3 PWM channels). And because of these problems, for example, the pong
sample does not work.

This commit addresses the problems by changing two things:
- it configures the GPIO shim driver to use the sensing mechanism
instead of GPIOTE channels for interrupt generation for all pins
- it limits the number of available SW PWM channels to 1 (instead of
  the default 3)

4dfab40cac drivers: display_nrf_led_matrix: Add option to light LEDs in groups
Add a new DT property named "pixel-group-size" that allows users to
configure the driver to refresh the matrix by illuminating multiple
LEDs in particular rows simultaneously. This way the maximum possible
brightness of the LEDs can be increased (as they can be lit longer)
and the timer interrupt handler is executed less frequently, what
results in decreased CPU load, but more GPIOTE/PPI channels needs to
be allocated if the PWM peripheral cannot be used. Thus, it is left
to users to select the configuration that suits them best.

Update definitions of both the bbc_microbit boards with this new
property, using the maximum available group size (to achieve maximum
possible brightness). For v2, no new resources are used (only all
channels in the already used PWM peripheral are now utilized).
For v1, two more GPIOTE and PPI channels are allocated.

6628a16e4d runners: nrfjprog: boilerplate and recover rework
Rework the runner to improve various issues.

Every board.cmake file for an nRF SoC target is repeating boilerplate
needed for the nrfjprog runner's --nrf-family argument. The
information we need to decide the --nrf-family is already available in
Kconfig, so just get it from there instead. Keep the --nrf-family
argument around for compatibility, though.

This cuts boilerplate burden for board maintainers.

We also need to revisit how this runner handles recovery to fix it
in nRF53 and keep things consistent everywhere else.

To cleanly handle additional readback protection features in nRF53,
add a --recover option that does an 'nrfjprog --recover' before
flashing. Keep the behavior consistent across SoCs by supporting it on
those too. Because this is expected to be a bit tricky for users to
understand, check if a --recover is needed if the 'nrfjprog --program'
fails because of protection, and tell the user how to fix it.

Finally, instead of performing a separate 'nrfjprog --eraseall', just
give --chiperase to 'nrfjprog --program' process's arguments instead
of --sectorerase. This is cleaner, resulting in fewer subprocesses and
avoiding an extra chip reset.

Having a separate 'west flash --recover' option doubles the number of
test cases if we want to keep exhaustively enumerating them. That
doesn't feel worthwhile, so update the test cases by picking a
representative subset of the possibilities. Each test now has enough
state that it's worth wrapping it up in a named tuple for readability.

97b07b943a drivers/serial/Kconfig.nrfx: Choose driver type basing on DT compatible
Remove prompts from Kconfig options `UART_x_NRF_UART*` that select
the type of nrfx driver (for UART or UARTE peripheral) to be used
for a given instance. This prevents the options from being modified
from configuration files.
Instead, make one of these options selected by default according to the
"compatible" property set for the corresponding UART node in devicetree.

This eliminates the need of changing both the "compatible" property in
devicetree and the Kconfig option selecting the driver type when a user
wants to switch between UART and UARTE for a given instance.

Since all `UART_x_NRF_UART*` options are made "hidden" by this commit,
all their occurrences in configuration files are removed.

a42a42cd5a kconfig: Replace defconfig singe-symbol 'if's with 'depends on'
Same deal as in commit eddd98f ("kconfig: Replace some single-symbol
'if's with 'depends on'"), for all symbols defined within defconfig
files. See that commit for an explanation.

Maybe 'if's were used originally to mirror the 'if's in the main Kconfig
files, and then it got copied around by people assuming 'if' must work
differently from 'depends on'. It doesn't match in every spot at least.
Better to keep it simple and just consistently use 'depends on' when
it's a single symbol/choice I think. Helps reinforce that 'if' isn't
magic too.

Verified by printing all Kconfig menu nodes (symbols, choices, menus,
etc.) before and after the change and diffing (should show no
difference).

c5839f834b kconfig: Remove assignments to CONFIG_<arch> syms and hide them
All board defconfig files currently set the architecture in addition to
the board and the SoC, by setting e.g. CONFIG_ARM=y. This spams up
defconfig files.

CONFIG_<arch> symbols currently being set in configuration files also
means that they are configurable (can be changed in menuconfig and in
configuration files), even though changing the architecture won't work,
since other things get set from -DBOARD=<board>. Many boards also allow
changing the architecture symbols independently from the SoC symbols,
which doesn't make sense.

Get rid of all assignments to CONFIG_<arch> symbols and clean up the
relationships between symbols and the configuration interface, like
this:

1. Remove the choice with the CONFIG_<arch> symbols in arch/Kconfig and
turn the CONFIG_<arch> symbols into invisible
   (promptless/nonconfigurable) symbols instead.

Getting rid of the choice allows the symbols to be 'select'ed (choice
   symbols don't support 'select').

2. Select the right CONFIG_<arch> symbol from the SOC_SERIES_* symbols.
This makes sense since you know the architecture if you know the SoC.

Put the select on the SOC_* symbol instead for boards that don't have
   a SOC_SERIES_*.

3. Remove all assignments to CONFIG_<arch> symbols. The assignments
would generate errors now, since the symbols are promptless.

The change was done by grepping for assignments to CONFIG_<arch>
symbols, finding the SOC_SERIES_* (or SOC_*) symbol being set in the
same defconfig file, and putting a 'select' on it instead.

See
https://github.com/ulfalizer/zephyr/commits/hide-arch-syms-unsquashed
for a split-up version of this commit, which will make it easier to see
how stuff was done. This needs to go in as one commit though.

This change is safer than it might seem re. outstanding PRs, because any
assignment to CONFIG_<arch> symbols generates an error now, making
outdated stuff easy to catch.

5977b3db2f dts: Remove mcuboot.overlay
As we want to remove dts dependency on Kconfig, we had a case based on
CONFIG_BOOTLOADER_MCUBOOT. From a DTS point of view that was just
getting the chosen property 'zephyr,code-partition' set. We can easily
move this to the actual dts files and remove the mcuboot.overlay.
